Brake repairs at your home or work

Brake pads and discs on most passenger cars can be replaced on a driveway or in a car park, which saves you leaving the car at a workshop. We inspect the whole braking system first — pads, discs, calipers, hoses and fluid — then tell you what needs replacing now and what can wait. You get the price before any work starts.

When it’s not a mobile job

Some brake jobs need a hoist or specialist equipment, such as major hydraulic or ABS repairs. If yours does, we tell you upfront rather than starting a job we can’t finish properly.

How brakes wear, and what gets replaced

Brake pads wear down every time you stop, and most have a wear indicator that squeals when they’re getting thin. Leave them too long and the pad’s metal backing grinds into the disc, turning a pad replacement into a pad-and-disc job. Discs wear too: they have a minimum thickness stamped on them, and warped or worn discs cause vibration through the pedal or steering wheel.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal feel soft after heavy braking. Many manufacturers recommend replacing it every two years — check your service book. We check pads, discs and fluid on every brake inspection and tell you what needs doing now and what can wait.

FAQ

Brakes: questions

Still unsure? Call 0413 404 040

Can you replace brake pads at my home?

Yes, in most cases. We need a safe, flat spot to work. Tell us your car and we’ll confirm.

Is it safe to drive with squealing brakes?

Noise can have several causes, but if braking feels different, there’s grinding or a warning light, stop driving and get them checked.

Do you replace discs as well as pads?

Yes. Worn or warped discs cause vibration and grinding; we measure them and replace them when they’re below spec.

Do you quote before starting?

Yes. We inspect the brakes and tell you the cost before any work starts.

How often should brake pads be replaced?

It depends on the car and how you drive. Have them checked at every service, and straight away if you hear squealing or grinding.
