Why hybrids won’t start

A hybrid still has a small 12-volt battery that powers its computers and switches the hybrid system on. When that battery is weak, the car can refuse to go into Ready mode even though the large hybrid battery is fine. It’s one of the most common hybrid call-outs, and it’s usually fixed on the spot with a test and, if needed, a new 12-volt battery.

Know what you’re dealing with

High-voltage parts — the orange cables, the hybrid battery and inverter — need specialist training and equipment. We scan the system and tell you exactly what a warning means; if a fault needs high-voltage repair work, we tell you upfront so you can take it to the right place.

Looking after a hybrid’s 12-volt battery

Because a hybrid doesn’t use a conventional starter motor to crank the engine, its 12-volt battery is often smaller than a petrol car’s and, in many models, sits in the boot or under a rear seat rather than under the bonnet. It still wears out, and a hybrid left parked for a few weeks can drain it completely. Driving the car regularly helps, and if it does go flat, follow the jump-start procedure in your owner’s manual — many hybrids have a dedicated jump terminal under the bonnet. We can test the 12-volt battery where the car is parked and replace it with the correct type.

Hybrid systems: questions

Still unsure? Call 0413 404 040

Can a normal mechanic service a hybrid car?

Routine servicing, yes — oil, filters, brakes and checks. High-voltage repairs need specialist training and equipment.

Why won’t my hybrid go into Ready mode?

A weak 12-volt battery is the most common cause. Other causes include blown fuses, faulty connections and hybrid system faults, which a scan will show.

Does a hybrid have a normal battery?

Yes. Alongside the large hybrid battery there’s a 12-volt battery that powers the computers and starts the system.

Do you replace hybrid batteries?

We scan and diagnose the hybrid system and tell you your options. If the high-voltage battery needs work, we’ll say so upfront.

Can you service my hybrid at home?

Yes. Routine servicing and 12-volt battery work can be done at your home or work.
