Do I need a mechanic or an auto electrician?

Call a mechanic for mechanical parts — the engine, brakes, suspension, steering, cooling system and servicing — and an auto electrician for anything electrical: batteries, alternators, starter motors, wiring, lights, sensors, warning lights and computer programming. Many problems, like a car that won’t start, sit across both trades, which is why an electro-mechanical business like BOSS 1 handles both in one visit.

What a mechanic fixes

  • Engine repairs, oil leaks and servicing
  • Brakes: pads, discs, calipers and fluid
  • Suspension, steering and wheel bearings
  • Cooling system: radiators, hoses and water pumps
  • Belts, clutches and drivetrain

What an auto electrician fixes

  • Batteries, charging and starting systems
  • Alternators and starter motors
  • Wiring faults, shorts and batteries that keep going flat
  • Lights, power windows, central locking and accessories
  • Sensors, warning lights, fault codes and module programming
  • Electrical parts of air conditioning and hybrid systems

Problems that could be either

ProblemCould be mechanicalCould be electrical
Car won’t startSeized engine, fuel deliveryBattery, starter, wiring, immobiliser

Air conditioning blowing warmRefrigerant leak, compressorFuses, relays, pressure switches, fans
OverheatingRadiator, water pump, thermostatElectric fan, temperature sensor
Battery keeps going flat—Alternator, parasitic drain

If you’re not sure which it is, start with whoever can test both. Our guide to a car that won’t start but the lights come on walks through the most common case.

Are they different trades?

Yes. In Australia, automotive electrical and light vehicle mechanical are separate trade qualifications. In NSW, a business that repairs cars for payment must hold a motor vehicle repairer licence — you can check any repairer’s licence on Service NSW.

Why BOSS 1 does both

BOSS 1 – Electro Mechanical is a licensed mobile mechanic and auto electrician (MVRL 60872) based in Merrylands. Because we cover both trades, one visit can test the battery, alternator and starter and fix the mechanical side too — no booking a second trade, no tow between workshops. See our services.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Still unsure? Call 0413 404 040

Is an auto electrician a mechanic?

Not exactly. They’re related but separate trades: auto electricians specialise in a car’s electrical systems, mechanics in its mechanical parts. Some businesses, like BOSS 1, cover both.

Can a mechanic fix electrical problems?

Many mechanics handle simple electrical jobs like batteries, but tracing wiring faults, parasitic drains and programming usually needs an auto electrician.

Who fixes car air conditioning?

Both can be involved: refrigerant leaks and compressors need a licensed air conditioning technician, while fuses, relays, sensors and fans are electrical. See car air conditioning.

Who should I call if my car won’t start?

Someone who can test the battery, starter and alternator, plus the mechanical side if needed. That’s exactly the job an electro-mechanical service is set up for.
