The cost of a car battery replacement depends mostly on the battery your car needs. Standard batteries for small and mid-size cars are the cheapest. SUVs, 4WDs and stop-start cars that need EFB or AGM batteries cost more, and some cars, especially European and stop-start models, also need the new battery registered with their computer. Ask for the price for your exact make and model before work starts.

Which battery does your car need?
| Battery type | Usually found in | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (flooded) | Older and basic cars without stop-start | Lowest |
| EFB (enhanced flooded battery) | Many entry-level stop-start cars | Higher |
| AGM (absorbent glass mat) | Stop-start, European and high-demand cars | Highest |
Your owner’s manual or the label on your current battery shows the type. Fitting a cheaper type than the car was built for usually means the new battery fails early.
What changes the price
- Battery type. Standard (flooded) batteries are cheapest. Stop-start cars need an EFB or AGM battery, which costs more — fitting the cheaper type usually means it fails early.
- Size and power. Bigger engines and 4WDs need larger batteries with more cranking power.
- Brand and warranty. Longer warranties usually cost more upfront.
- Fitting. Batteries under seats, in the boot or behind panels take longer to change.
- Programming. Many European cars and some stop-start models need the new battery registered with the car’s computer using a scan tool, or the charging system won’t manage it properly.
Do you need a new battery, or just a charge?
A battery that went flat because the lights were left on can often be recharged. A battery that fails a load or health test, struggles on every start, or is past its usual life needs replacing. According to the RACV, a standard battery usually lasts three to five years and an AGM battery five to seven. Read more in how long a car battery lasts in Sydney.
How BOSS 1 handles battery jobs
We come to you anywhere across our 20 Western Sydney suburbs and test before we sell you anything: the battery, the alternator’s charging output and the starter. If the battery is the problem, we replace it on the spot and register it with the car where that’s needed. If it’s actually the alternator or starter, we tell you — a new battery won’t fix those. See our mobile battery service.
