How to choose a mobile mechanic in Sydney: 7 checks before you book

Before you book a mobile mechanic in Sydney, check three things: that the business holds a NSW motor vehicle repairer licence (you can look it up on Service NSW in a minute), that they tell you the likely cost and any call-out fee before they start, and that they’re upfront when a job needs a workshop. Licensed, transparent and honest about limits beats cheapest.

7 checks before you book

  1. Check the licence. In NSW, a business that repairs cars for payment must hold a motor vehicle repairer licence. Ask for the number and look it up on Service NSW.
  2. Check the business is real. A proper business can give you its business name and ABN, which you can confirm on ABN Lookup.
  3. Ask how they price. Get the likely cost, the call-out fee and what happens if they find more work — before anyone picks up a spanner.
  4. Read recent reviews. Look for detailed, recent Google reviews and how the business replies to the bad ones.
  5. Ask whether they test first. A good mechanic tests the battery, alternator and starter before selling you a battery, and checks the cause behind a warning light before replacing parts.
  6. Ask about parts and warranty. Which brands they fit, and what warranty comes with the parts and the work.
  7. Check they’re honest about limits. Some jobs need a hoist or specialist tools. A mobile mechanic who tells you that upfront is one you can trust with the rest.

Red flags

  • No licence number, or reluctance to give one
  • Pressure to replace parts on the spot without testing
  • No idea of cost until the job is done
  • No invoice, or vague answers about warranty
  • Claims to fix anything, anywhere, at any time

Yes. A business that repairs cars for payment in NSW must hold a motor vehicle repairer licence. You can check any licence on Service NSW.

How do I check a mechanic’s licence in NSW?

Use the Service NSW “Check a motor vehicle repairer licence” tool. Search by the business name or licence number and check the licence is current.

Should I pay a call-out fee?

Many mobile mechanics charge one, either separately or built into the job. What matters is being told about it before they start.

Is a mobile mechanic as good as a workshop?

For batteries, diagnostics, brakes and servicing, yes — the work is the same. Jobs that need a hoist are better done in a workshop, and a good mobile mechanic will tell you when that’s the case.
